A must

New and Unmissable

A visit to MuPop is an experience in itself, with 150 listening points bringing POP music from the 18th century to the 90s to life! The museum is unique in every way, leaving the imagination free to run riot thanks to its original scenography (dance hall, luthier’s workshop, punk venue, etc.). MuPop is national in scope, housing 3,500 musical instruments and objects, the largest collection in France. It’s a museum, yes, but above all it’s a space that swings and makes you want to move to the beat. A magical setting dedicated to all the music that makes you tick!

Exceptional collections

Hurdy-gurdies

The history of the Montluçon museum begins with this unique collection of hurdy-gurdies. MuPop has 34 hurdy-gurdies on display in the instrumental section of the museum, as well as a luthier’s workshop where visitors can learn how this traditional instrument, so dear to the Bourbonnais, works.

Bagpipes

MuPop’s collection consists mainly of French instruments from the Berry, Bourbonnais, Nivernais, Auvergne and Limousin regions. The purchase in 1993 of Jean-Michel Renard’s large collection of bagpipes was a key factor in the creation of MuPop. Today, more than 60 instruments are on display.

Accordions

Whether chromatic or diatonic, the accordion is a great example of popular music. It made France dance at the bals musette and replaced the cabrette at the end of the 19th century. MuPop is showcasing its collection and offering a chance to try out the free reed principle.

Percussion

To visit MuPop is to be carried away by popular music. The rhythm is in your skin and the song is in your head. The memory box opens up as you experiment. Percussion instruments have a special place in the permanent exhibition.

Guitars & amps

Electric guitars marked an important turning point in the history of popular music and gave rise to contemporary electro-amplified music. The MuPop collection is unique in France. MuPop has 49 guitars on display in the instrumental section and 27 in the musical section.

Located in the magnificent historic centre of Montluçon, this museum is a must-see if you’re visiting the region. The audio-guide tour is a real treat, and the 3-storey museum covers all styles of music and all kinds of instruments. The audio-guide allows you to discover or recall a wealth of music and songs. The theme of the current temporary exhibition, which runs until 05/01/2020, is “summer hits”, and it’s an invitation to dance and sing along. In short, a visit to the MUPOP is a delight. I advise you to allow 3 hours for your visit to get the most out of it. Enjoy your visit to all those who are plugged in, and why not to those who are unplugged too.

As a group outing, this museum was an excellent surprise. The headphones are easy to use, and everything is very diverse. There’s a mix of contemporary and older music. I didn’t see 2 hours and 30 minutes go by.
