The Berry canal greenway – EN

On foot, by bike, with a pushchair or scooter, the old towpath of the Canal de Berry between Montluçon and Vallon-en-Sully is reserved for non-motorised traffic. There are many engineering structures along the way, including locks, lock houses, the Vaux canal bridge and the Davoue drawbridge. You can also take in two environmental works of art at Rouéron (Audes) and Allée des Soupirs (Vallon-en-Sully).

A little history of

the Canal de Berry

A witness to and player in the development of the Commentry/Montluçon industrial basin, the Berry canal played a key role in the economic landscape until the end of the 19th century.

Because of its small gauge and competition from the railways, it was decommissioned in 1955.

Twelve interpretation panels have been installed between Saint-Victor and Vallon-en-Sully to present the history of the canal in a fun way for all the family.

Not to be missed

The Berry Canal Museum

This museum presents the history, industry, crafts, shops, administration, customs and habits of yesteryear…

It opens the doors to a vanished world, that of the transport of goods by inland canals, thanks to a clear and complete scenography. Outside, there are two authentic barges where you can discover the sailor’s living quarters and the quay with its unloading simulation.
