The green way of the Berry Canal

On foot, by bike, with a stroller or a scooter, the old towpath of the Berry canal between Montluçon and Vallon-en-Sully is reserved for non motorized traffic. Numerous works of art punctuate your stroll: locks, lock houses, Vaux canal bridge, Davoue drawbridge… Enhance your journey with the discovery of two environmental works of art in Rouéron (Audes) and on the Allée des Soupirs (Vallon-en-Sully).

A little history on

the Berry Canal

Witness and actor of the development of the Commentry/Montluçon industrial basin, the Berry Canal has a capital role until the end of the 19th century in the economic landscape.

Due to its small gauge and the competition of the railroad, it was decommissioned in 1955.

Twelve interpretation panels have been installed between Saint-Victor and Vallon-en-Sully in order to present the history of the canal in an entertaining way, to the whole family.

Essential

The Berry Canal museum

This museum presents the history, industry, crafts, trade, administration, manners and customs of the past…

It offers to open the doors of a disappeared world, that of the transport of goods by inland canals thanks to a clear and complete scenography. Outside, two authentic barges where you will discover the sailor’s habitat and the quay with its unloading simulation.
