Did you know?

Forêt d’Exception® label

Only around twenty of France’s 1,300 state-owned forests have been awarded the Forêt d’Exception® label. Tronçais, a prestigious oak forest, was awarded this label in May 2018. A living testament to French forestry excellence, Tronçais is world-renowned for the quality of its timber, used to craft the barrels that bring out the very best in the finest wines and spirits. The label highlights excellence in forest management. It also recognises the preserved environmental heritage, the richness and diversity of the cultural heritage, the hospitality shown to the public and the activities organised in this unique area.

Across the 10,500 ha of the Tronçais Forest, facilities for tourists and walkers are organised around five main areas: the Futaie Colbert II, the Rond de Thiolais, the Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais pond, the Pirot pond and the Rond de la Cave.

Fountains and legends

Around forty springs dot the forest. Their mere presence or their strange names have always given rise to legends, beliefs and cults. They contribute to the mysterious atmosphere of Tronçais.

One cures leprosy and skin diseases, whilst another heralds a bountiful harvest. The Font Brigadier makes people fall in love and the Font Viljot predicts marriages… Whatever their mysterious powers may be, they add charm to many walks through the Tronçais Forest.

the stag’s bellow

Mysterious and awe-inspiring, an enigmatic call echoes through the forest between September and October: the stag’s rut. This is the rutting season for this iconic species of the Tronçais Forest. To witness this unusual spectacle in the best possible conditions, an observation point, accessible from the Rond de Vitray, has been set up. There are information boards to help visitors better understand the life of the red deer.

This is a unique spectacle that requires the utmost discretion, as the survival of the species is at stake. It is therefore recommended that you follow the ONF’s guidelines to the letter.
