A living museum

It plays out in the streets.
It enters homes, cars, hearts…
It brings out universal emotions within us…
It softens our hearts, surprises us, inspires us.
It brings us together, it is shared:
It’s folk music!

A must

Unique and Unmissable

A visit to MuPop is a unique experience in its own right, with 150 listening points that will take you on a journey through all the pop music from the 18th century to the 1990s! This museum is truly unique in every way and gives free rein to everyone’s imagination thanks to its original exhibition design (dancing, a luthier’s workshop, a punk venue…). A museum of national significance, the MuPop houses 3,500 musical instruments and artefacts, making it the largest collection in France. A museum, certainly, but above all a space that swings and makes you want to move to the beat. A magical setting dedicated to all kinds of music… that get your heart racing!

Exceptional collections

Hooked lyres

The history of the Montluçon Museum begins with this unique collection of hurdy-gurdies. The MuPop exhibits 34 hurdy-gurdies in its instrument gallery and features a luthier’s workshop, offering visitors the chance to understand how this traditional instrument—so dear to the people of the Bourbonnais region—works.

Bagpipes

The MuPop’s collection comprises mainly French instruments from the regions of Berry, Bourbonnais, Nivernais, Auvergne and Limousin. The acquisition in 1993 of Jean-Michel Renard’s extensive collection of bagpipes was a significant milestone in the creation of the MuPop. Today, more than 60 instruments are on display.

Accordions

Whether chromatic or diatonic, the accordion is a fine example of folk music. It gets France dancing at musette balls and replaced the cabrette at the end of the 19th century. The MuPop showcases its collection and invites visitors to try out the free-reed mechanism.

Percussion

Visiting the MuPop means letting yourself be swept away by popular music. The rhythm in your bones and the song in your head. A treasure trove of memories unfolds as you explore. Percussion instruments feature prominently in the permanent exhibition.

Guitars & Amps

Electric guitars mark a major turning point in the history of popular music and gave rise to contemporary amplified electronic music. MuPop’s collection is unique in France. MuPop displays 49 guitars along the instrumental trail and 27 in the musical trail.

A museum in the magnificent historic centre of Montluçon – a must-see if you’re visiting the region. It really was a wonderful discovery. The tour with an audio guide is very enjoyable; across the museum’s three floors, you’ll encounter all kinds of musical styles and discover all sorts of instruments. What’s more, there are plenty of things you can try out.The audio guide lets you discover or reminisce about a whole host of songs and tunes. The current temporary exhibition, which ends on 5 January 2020, is themed ‘Summer Hits’ – it’s an invitation to dance and sing along. In short, a visit to the MUPOP is a real treat. I’d advise setting aside three hours to make the most of it. Enjoy your visit, all you music fans – and why not those who aren’t so into music too?

On a group outing, this museum was a lovely surprise. The headphones are easy to use, and there’s a great variety on offer. Contemporary and older music are mixed together. Two and a half hours that flew by.
