A witness to and key player in the development of the Commentry/Montluçon industrial area, the Berry Canal played a vital role in the economic landscape until the end of the19th century.
Due to its narrow gauge and competition from the railway, it was decommissioned in 1955.
This museum showcases the history, industry, crafts, trades, administration, and the customs and traditions of days gone by…
It offers a glimpse into a bygone world – that of goods transport via inland waterways – through a clear and comprehensive exhibition layout. Outside, there are two authentic barges where you can explore the bargeman’s living quarters and the quay, complete with a simulated unloading scene.

The Berry Canal, the very backbone of Montluçon’s industry, is beautifully showcased thanks to the work of enthusiasts who have collected documents and artefacts to enable visitors to immerse themselves in life as it was back then.
A lovely cycle ride along the canal and a brilliant visit to the museum. You can cycle all the way from Montluçon to Vallon.
