Whether on foot, by bike, in a pushchair or on a scooter, the former towpath along the Berry Canal between Montluçon and Vallon-en-Sully is reserved for non-motorised traffic. Numerous engineering structures punctuate your walk: locks, lock-keepers’ houses, the Vaux canal bridge, the Davoue drawbridge… Enhance your journey by discovering two environmental art installations in Rouéron (Audes) and on the Allée des Soupirs (Vallon-en-Sully).

A bit of history about

the Berry Canal

A witness to and key player in the development of the Commentry/Montluçon industrial area, the Berry Canal played a vital role in the economic landscape until the end of the19th century.

Due to its narrow gauge and competition from the railway, it was decommissioned in 1955.

Not to be missed

The Berry Canal Museum

This museum showcases the history, industry, crafts, trades, administration, and the customs and traditions of days gone by…

It offers a glimpse into a bygone world – that of goods transport via inland waterways – through a clear and comprehensive exhibition layout. Outside, there are two authentic barges where you can explore the bargeman’s living quarters and the quay, complete with a simulated unloading scene.
